5. Tim Beck’s play calling

An unknown factor for the Horns starting this weekend against Tulsa will be the person calling the plays on offense. Herman could’ve taken over for the play calling at one point in the loss to Maryland, but nothing has been confirmed there yet.

Offensive coordinator Tim Beck had some obvious struggles last season and that seems to be coming to fruition again to start this season. If Herman is smart in making his moves with an offense that continues to be out of its comfort zone, he should take over the play calling completely.

The defense carried the torch for the Horns as a whole last year, and for the entire team to make progress the offense needs to catch up. Beck and Herman haven’t made much progress in utilizing all the talent and depth on the offensive side of the ball. The impact from bringing in co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Herb Hand was apparent in Week 1.

Sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger will get another shot to prove his worth as the permanent starter this week. Beck’s play calling style will have a huge impact on the outcome of the offense in Week 2 and Week 3. It’s hard to see how anything will turn around too much in such a short span of time given the Week 1 showing. This is something to follow in Week 2, though.
