An underwhelming performance came from sophomore Texas football running back Daniel Young in Week 1, and he’s a candidate to break out in Week 2.

In what figures to be at least a two or three possession victory for Texas football over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the second week of the 2018 campaign, the ground game is something to pay attention to. In Week 1, one of the starting running backs on the first official depth chart for the Longhorns, sophomore Daniel Young, had a less than stellar performance.

That should be turned around entering a much easier Week 2 matchup with head Texas football coach Tom Herman fighting to get any sort of momentum going for his team. He can start to find that groove for his offense with a solid ground game behind one of his youngest and most talented rushers in Young.

Last season, Young led the Horns in rushing yards among all running backs. Then true freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger wound up leading the entire team in rushing yards. His 373 rushing yards and three touchdowns were big for the Horns last season. He also contributed to the Texas Bowl win over the Mizzou Tigers.

Coming into the 2018 season, many figured that Young would run away with the starting job. He was the proven option that already has experience in this offense. Young still needs to prove that’s something he can handle following the Week 1 loss. Nothing of the sort was done so far.

Here’s a look at how the running game could shake out for the Texas Longhorns in Week 2 and what role Daniel Young can play in the success of the offense.
