3. Texas’ front seven will shut down Tulsa’s ground game

There were some huge surprises that came by way of the Texas front seven last week. While it did take a while for the Texas defense to adjust coming out of the gate, eventually defensive coordinator Todd Orlando helped his team respond nicely. We should continue to see the progress of the Texas defense in Week 2.

This Texas defense actually gave its offense the chance on quite a few occasions to get that elusive comeback drive against the Terps in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter. The offense was just never really able to convert on those opportunities in what turned out to be a stingy outing for the Maryland defense.

Yet, the strength of this side of the ball for the Horns last season was run stopping. Texas competes in one of the toughest conferences in the nation in terms of strength of running backs. The Big 12 is no joke in that regard. However, the Horns continued to put on display the depth that it has in the front seven to be able to stop opposing ground games.

Last season, Maryland gashed the Horns on the ground. It was a large reason why the Horns fell short against the Terps to start the 2017 campaign. Texas held the Terps to nearly 3.0 yards per carry last week. This spells trouble for a Tulsa ground game that actually got off to a nice start for the year last week with two running backs going over 100 yards in the same game.
