2. Sam Ehlinger’s shot to rebound

Last week saw sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger get off to a decent start in his first career start in a season opener. Herman named Ehlinger the starting quarterback hoping that he would continue to build off the momentum established in the bowl win over the Mizzou Tigers to cap the 2017 season.

However, if you do take away that 39-yard touchdown pass from Ehlinger to junior wide receiver Devin Duvernay last week, it was a pretty brutal stat line for the starting Texas signal caller. Duvernay made a miraculous catch that gave Ehlinger one of his two touchdown passes on the game.

Offensive coordinator Tim Beck gave Ehlinger less designed runs last week, so his only two touchdowns of the game came in the air. We won’t likely see Ehlinger using his legs anymore this week to avoid the risk of injury. It would be nice to see him avoid making any big mistakes and establishing a nice rhythm early on.

The one thing we could see this week is Ehlinger helping this team take a very early lead on the Golden Hurricane and him hitting the bench after halftime. Ehlinger could give way for either junior Shane Buechele or one of the two freshman quarterbacks on the roster if Texas does have a big lead coming into the third quarter.
