5. Caden Sterns is a potential All-American candidate

It was another big week for the true freshman standout safety Caden Sterns. After already having to put in a ton of work just to win a starting spot in what was an experienced Texas secondary, Sterns is proving his worth just in the first two weeks of the season.

Just in the Tulsa game alone, Sterns racked up four total tackles, one tackle for loss, and his first career interception. Sterns should already be making his case to be a First-Team All-Big 12 safety if he continues to play like this. He’s filling the shoes of the departed All-American safety DeShon Elliott very well in the early season.

Fellow standout freshman safety B.J. Foster also nabbed his first career interception in this game. It’s not the expected seniors like P.J. Locke III, Kris Boyd, and Davante Davis that are leading the was for this defensive backfield. Instead, Sterns and Foster have been two of the best defensive backs for the Horns thus far.

It’s tough to put players like Davis and junior safety Brandon Jones in the role that they haven’t made a big impact since they’ve missed time due to injury. Jones had a huge Week 1, but the pairing between him and Sterns could become the best in the Big 12 pretty fast. Both were top-rated safety recruits and combine together nicely.
