With an identical record as last season heading into the same Week 3 matchup against the USC Trojans, Texas football is hoping for a different result now.

The first two weeks of the season could’ve gone much better for Texas football. Two games where the Longhorns were heavily favored resulted in one win and one loss. If nothing else, at least the loss at the hands of the Maryland Terrapins came by just five points. It is beside the point that the Horns had a narrow margin of defeat against the Terps since the game should be won regardless.

Texas has a lot to play for against the USC Trojans in Week 3, especially since this is the first ranked opponent on the slate this season. Maryland and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane aren’t even close to being ranked teams. Although, Maryland did garner a whole nine points in the Coaches Poll this week to fit in around the Mizzou Tigers and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in the rankings.

The first game of the season saw the Horns fall short to Maryland by the final score of 34-29. It was sealed off of a fumble from senior running back Tre Watson and two late interceptions from sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Texas had some other chances to take control of that game, but never took advantage.

In Week 2, Texas did claim its first victory of the season but it came against one of the projected lower teams in the American Athletic Conference in the Golden Hurricane. That victory came by the final score of 28-21, despite the Horns opening up as 23-point favorites.

Here’s a look at some notable numbers for the Texas Longhorns from the first two weeks of the 2018 season.
