Texas Football: Notable numbers from the first two weeks for Longhorns
Sam Ehlinger’s completion percentage
At least one trend for the Horns is going in the right direction on the offensive side of the ball through two games. Ehlinger didn’t start off the season too well completing his passing attempts as he posted a completion percentage just above 50. However, Ehlinger wound up setting a career high in completion percentage in Week 2 and now it well over 60 percent.
The fear was that Ehlinger was going to complete well under 60 percent of his passes this season, and that could still happen. Up to this point, Ehlinger is on a good track. Even though this was an easier opponent for the Horns to get in Week 2, it’s still nice to see Ehlinger completing the bulk of his passing attempts.
More than anything, the positive note against Tulsa for Ehlinger was the lack of turnovers. He did have one fumble on the day that Tulsa did recover, but he didn’t toss a single interception. The bulk of the starts that Ehlinger has in his short collegiate career so far for Texas saw him throw at least one interception.
Another issue in regard to Ehlinger’s turnovers is that most of them came at the worst time possible last season, and against Maryland. He saved his two interceptions of the season to come against Maryland in the final minutes of the fourth quarter when all Texas needed was one score. Ehlinger held on to the football much better in the win over Tulsa.
