Second half scoring

Texas needed to improve its ability to close out games this year, something it has not done even before the start of the Herman-era. Charlie Strong and Mack Brown (at the end of his tenure) struggled to close out games in recent years, especially at home at DKR. It hasn’t gotten much better so far.

This season is furthering the issue of closing out games in the second half. Texas was just two points behind the Terps at halftime of the season opener. Although the Horns lost in both halves against the Terps, it did worse in the second than the first. Even with a rain delay that could’ve provided time for further adjustments, Texas looked slow through and through.

Texas was down 24-22 against Maryland at the half and was outscored 10-7 in the second half. That wasn’t near as bad as the Tulsa game, in which Texas had a comfortable 21-0 lead heading into halftime. Tulsa outscored Texas 21-7 in the second half and really made some of the home fans sweat late in the game.

For the woes to stop, the offense and defense need to find a consistent rhythm that seemingly hasn’t been there in quite a while. Both sides of the ball had roller coaster performances over the last two weeks. The faith is stronger in defensive coordinator Todd Orlando though than offensive coordinator Tim Beck.
