Field goals, or lack thereof

A position battle that didn’t get much focus during the off-season was for the starting kicker. Last season, it was Joshua Rowland that had the kicking duties but he didn’t do too well. Rowland capped last season on a solid streak, but he only made 11 of his 18 attempts all in all. That was not good enough for him to be the starting kicker this year.

Herman has yet to even attempt a field goal this season through two games with true freshman Cameron Dicker. The only bit of a stat line that Dicker has posted thus far is seven extra point attempts. He has put through all seven extra point attempts, but the coaching staff should expect that out of him.

Texas had quite a few red zone possessions, including one that stalled out against Tulsa where Herman should’ve kicked the field goal. The two interceptions from Ehlinger against Maryland also prevented the Horns from trying to kick any field goals to tighten up the score. Dicker could get his first shot at making a field goal for Texas football against USC.

The kicking game is going to become an important part of the Texas gameplan eventually. Herman has it as an afterthought so far. By all indications, Dicker is the right answer for the Texas kicking game. He’s part of a freshman duo that will be the future of Texas special teams along with Australian punter Ryan Bujcevski.
