Texas Football: Best Longhorns’ performers in win over USC
One of the biggest struggles for Texas football last season was the kicking game. That led to the position battle for the kicking duties that took place all throughout the off-season. While it was not the position battle that got the most attention during the course of the off-season for the Horns, it was key to the playout of the special teams this fall.
Senior kicker Joshua Rowland competed with true freshman Cameron Dicker for the starting duties. Dicker won out, but he didn’t actually get the chance to kick a field goal until this past weekend. All he got to try was a few extra points against Tulsa and Maryland since Herman went for it on fourth down often.
Rowland did finish off the 2017 season nicely after a rough start to the year, but it was not enough to edge out Dicker, and he showed why against the Trojans. Dicker got to kick seven times in total and made each and every attempt. He was perfect on four extra point attempts and three field goal tries.
His long for the game was 46 yards and also had some room to spare on most of his field goal attempts. Moreover, two of his field goals came at a time when Texas needed some momentum of decent drives that didn’t reach the red zone. The two true freshmen leading the way on special teams, between Dicker and punter Ryan Bujcevski, played key roles in the Horns knocking off the Trojans.
