Texas Football vs. USC: 5 overreactions from win over Trojans
3. Daniel Young deserves more carries each game
The last two weeks saw sophomore running back Daniel Young get some key work where he proved his worth. Young started to see Ingram cut into his workload in the first two weeks, and deservedly so.
Yet, the running back depth for the Horns is coming along nicely no matter how you split up the workload through the first three weeks of the season. Even senior running back Tre Watson has shown why he got the most carries in Week 3. Watson is leading the Horns in rushing yards up to this point. He also has yet to rush for more than 100 yards in any individual game with this team.
In a mop-up role in Week 2 against Tulsa, Young even posted some nice numbers with more than 40 rushing yards on just three carries. Against USC, Young rushed for 57 yards on 12 carries. This season, Young is actually averaging nearly a full yard more carry than he was last year. That is pretty inflated because of his 41-rushing yard performance against Tulsa, though.
Watson finished the USC game with 72 rushing yards on 18 carries and no touchdowns. He continued to be an efficient producer out of the bakckfield for the Horns, since he is still averaging more than four yards per carry on the year. Texas does not need Watson to be a 1,000-yard rusher this fall, but continue to do what he’s been doing.
The point here is that Young should keep getting a decent workload week in and week out. He’s a more bruising rusher than either Watson or Ingram. Each of these three running backs brings a unique skill set to the table that makes for a much better ground game than last year for Texas. Young was big again in the role he was asked to fill in Week 3.
