Texas Football vs. USC: 5 overreactions from win over Trojans
1. Texas might be “back” soon
We can’t jump the gun just to say that the Horns are going to be back immediately and compete for a Big 12 Championship. That’s what happened after Texas knocked off the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to start the 2016 season. After beating the Irish, Texas wound up only winning five games in the final year under Charlie Strong.
However, we can look back and say that this performance from Texas does signal some form of progress under Herman. Texas did not get a key win last season, despite a two-win improvement in the final record. Getting an eight or nine win season was the key this fall, and that could still be possible.
If only Texas had not lost to Maryland in the season opener, this team would be carrying a ton of momentum into Big 12 play. Texas still has to fight to stay alive for bowl eligibility with how grueling the upcoming schedule is. The Big 12 slate opens with the Oklahoma Sooners, Kansas State Wildcats, and TCU.
The chances that Texas would actually compete in the Big 12 this year looked bleak following that disappointing start to the first two weeks. A 37-14 victory over USC was a completely different effort and efficiency for the Horns in Week 3. We are given a whole new energy to be excited for the rest of the 2018 season.
