What the passing game needs to do

The passing game for the Horns has actually been pretty efficient under sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger this year. Most Texas football fans had to assume that junior quarterback Shane Buechele would be the more productive quarterback in the passing game since Ehlinger is more valuable evading the pocket and using his legs to pick up yardage.

So far this season, Ehlinger has a slightly better completion percentage than he had last season but not by much. He has 723 passing yards and six touchdowns through the air, compared to just two interceptions. Ehlinger also has 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns this year and he continues to make an impact with his legs.

The most important thing for Ehlinger in this game is the continued theme of taking care of the football. He’s done a much better job of avoiding those costly mistakes late in the game that plagued Ehlinger and hurt Texas football so much last season. Both of his interceptions came in just one quarter this season in Week 1.

Last year, one of the worst games of Buechele’s career came against TCU which was a large reason why the Horns put up only seven points. Buechele completed less than half of his passes for 254 yards and one touchdown. He was under pressure all game, but also didn’t have his best showing. This time around for Texas football, Ehlinger needs to be more productive and with around two passing touchdowns and no more than one interception.
