For this program to arrive back at the top of the college football landscape, Texas football made a statement by beating the Oklahoma Sooners.

In a very long game for the Texas football program that featured quite a few ups and downs, the turnout from the Red River Rivalry was ultimately positive. The Longhorns walked out of the Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas with a 48-45 nail-biting victory won by true freshman kicker Cameron Dicker.

Texas actually entered this game as touchdown underdogs against then ranked No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners. The over/under was also set at just 61.5 points, which wound up getting blown out of the water by a good margin. With the 93 total points scored in the game, it was both an exciting and fast paced outing that few fans probably could’ve expected.

Most of the focus in this game fell on whether head Texas football coach Tom Herman’s squad was for real following the wins over the USC Trojans, TCU Horned Frogs, and Kansas State Wildcats. For Oklahoma, it was about making star quarterback Kyler Murray an even stronger Heisman contender on the national stage and furthering the profile for the College Football Playoff.

Both Oklahoma and Texas proved they’re pretty solid teams still capable of getting for spots in the Big 12 Championship Game and the Playoff. When it’s all said and done, it will likely be one of these two teams representing the Big 12 in the Playoff, if this conference winds up sending a team. The No. 6 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers could still contend for a Playoff berth and Big 12 Championship Game appearance too.

Here’s a look at the five definitive takeaways from the huge win for the Texas Longhorns over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Shootout on Oct. 6.
