Texas Football: Mid-season report card for every position
Receiving Corps
This does part of the list does include the tight ends too. While senior tight end Andrew Beck had a bigger impact than expected in the early part of the season, it does not come close to what the wide receivers did for this offense. Beck was the first tight end since Jermaine Gresham back in 2007 to rack up at least three receptions in multiple games in the same year.
That’s really helped to mix things up for the Texas passing game this year to have a few different threats for which Sam Ehlinger can look to. Beck is not a natural receiver, but he doesn’t have to be with other wide receivers like juniors Collin Johnson, Devin Duvernay, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey surrounding him on offense.
Johnson has already surpassed his receiving touchdown mark from a season ago. And, Humphrey is having a true breakout campaign where he leads the Horns in receiving yards and touchdowns. While Johnson was previously established as a true NFL prospect, Humphrey really gained the attention of NFL scouts with his start to 2018.
Duvernay could use a boost in his stat line in the coming weeks, but he’s providing an added threat deep for the Horns. The lack of production from Duvernay is not out of him failing to catch the ball or run his routes effectively. Johnson and Humphrey are just getting more looks in the passing game at this point.
