6. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Date: Sep. 8

Location: Austin, TX

Result: Win, 28-21

Of all the games that the Horns could win this season by a narrow margin, none could be more dumbfounding in terms of the course of events of the game than what happened against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in Week 2. Texas entered the game as a three possession favorite over the Golden Hurricane but had a big letdown in the second half.

Ehlinger actually showed some marked progress in the win over Tulsa that continued all the way up until he was injured in the Baylor game in Week 7 when he went down with a shoulder injury. However, the defense also had some issues due to injuries that did iron themselves out starting in Week 3.

Watson wound up having one of his better games of the season which featured more than 75 total yards from scrimmage and one receiving touchdown. True freshman running back Keaontay ingram also got in the end zone once while racking up 64 yards on 10 carries. Those performances helped the Horns carry a comfortable 21-0 lead into halftime where things started to look up.

Yet, the second half was a much different story with Tulsa outscoring Texas 21-7 to make things really close. At least there were some pretty positive takeaways from this win. The beginnings of some breakout campaigns for true freshman also came about on the defensive side of the ball too. Freshmen safeties Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster each nabbed one interception that was the first of both of their collegiate careers.
