5. Baylor Bears

Date: Oct. 13

Location: Austin, TX

Result: Win, 23-17

Baylor present a pretty obvious trap game situation for the Horns. Entering Week 7, Baylor was coming off a big win for the program over Kansas State on the road. Sophomore quarterback Charlie Brewer and the pair of talented wide receivers in Denzel Mims and Jalen Hurd made life difficult for Texas at times in Week 7.

Neither offense could get much going in this Oct. 13 meeting which came right down to the wire. Brewer did a good job to hold strong against the team that both his father and grandfather played for. A spirited effort fell short on the final drive of the game, allowing the Horns to escape with one of the harder fought wins of the year.

In terms of how much Texas football fans sweat this game late in the fourth quarter and the overall entertainment factor, it lived up to the billing. However, Texas fans would take a steamrolling of Baylor over an close and fun game any day of the week. That’s just not what the fan base got here.

Brewer barely completed 50 percent of his passing attempts for 245 yards and one touchdown with one interception. He hung tough in a quickly collapsing pocket all game. Brewer had to battle junior Texas quarterback Shane Buechele following the shoulder injury to Ehlinger. Buechele’s first appearance of the season was another factor that makes this win unique.
