1. Texas finally controls its own destiny in the Big 12

The last time that Texas was truly in a spot to control its own destiny in Big 12 play afternoon four games against conference opponents was the 2013 campaign, under Mack Brown. Texas wound up falling short of the sole share of the Big 12 Championship that season with a few key losses down the stretch and a resulting nine win campaign.

Now, Texas holds sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings exiting Week 7 and entering its first bye week of the regular season. The record sits at 6-1 (4-0 Big 12) with likely the toughest conference opponents of the regular season out of the way in the form of Oklahoma. The rest of the road should be much less difficult than the first half.

However, Texas can not overlook a rising opponent of the stature of the Texas Tech Red Raiders or Iowa State Cyclones. And, even though the West Virginia Mountaineers were clobbered by Iowa State in Week 7, that should still be a huge late season game on the Forty Acres to determine the Big 12’s fate. At this point, Oklahoma State and the Kansas Jayhawks should be the easiest games left on tap.

A rematch between Texas football and Oklahoma could be set for the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game, if all goes according to plan. It would be the second time the Horns and Sooners met in the DFW Metroplex this year. If Texas takes advantage of being in the driver’s seat in the Big 12 now and win the games it’s supposed to, a Playoff berth isn’t unreasonable.
