Texas Football: 5 best wins under Tom Herman so far for Longhorns
1. Oklahoma Sooners
Date: Oct. 6, 2018
Location: Cotton Bowl, Dallas, TX
Result: 48-45
That marquee win that everyone waited for from Herman and this new regime on the Forty Acres came through in a big way against the Oklahoma Sooners in this year’s edition of the Red River Showdown. Texas snapped a losing streak that dated back to the 2015 season in Red River by eking out this victory in Week 6 of the 2018 season.
Red River nearly resulted in a defeat for the Horns with a fourth quarter collapse that was very close to costing them. Texas football held a 45-24 lead at one point in the second half. Three straight touchdowns in the span of less than six minutes made for a tie game entering the final two minutes.
Texas got one chance to avoid overtime and to notch its first points since the end of the third quarter on a Lil’Jordan Humphrey touchdown catch. Sam Ehlinger did lead a drive good enough to put the Horns in range to give true freshman kicker Cameron Dicker in a position to win the game. Dicker would immediately become a Texas football legend by nailing the game-winning 40-yard field goal attempt.
Texas halted Oklahoma’s 21-point run and kept the game from going into overtime since the field goal came with only nine seconds to go. The late game efforts of the Oklahoma offense which helped total more than 500 yards for the entire outing came up short and it vaulted the Horns into the top 10 of the AP Poll for the first time since 2010.
