A schedule to cap the regular season for Texas football gives the team an opportunity to set itself apart from the rest of the Big 12 very soon.

The ability of Texas football to take hold of the Big 12 and still sit atop the conference standings by the end of the regular season is completely dependent on what happens in the next five games. It will be the season defining stretch that determines the play out of the most successful year thus far for the Longhorns in nearly a full decade.

The first half of the year had a tons of highs and lows for Texas football including a few close calls, some very surprising wins, and a truly devastating defeat. Now, the Horns carry a top six ranking into a five game stretch in which winning out puts them in a position to earn a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Learning from some of the mistakes of the first half is key to finding more success the rest of the way. Close wins over the likes of the Baylor Bears, Kansas State Wildcats, and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane could foreshadow some endings to matchups against the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Iowa State Cyclones if the Horns aren’t careful.

The bye week did come at a great time for the Horns with the injury to its starting quarterback and two emotional victories in a row exhausting this team. Wins over Baylor and the Oklahoma Sooners looked to completely take it out of this team mentally on both sides of the ball.

A big Week 9 victory over Oklahoma State on the road would be just the confidence boost that Texas football could need to head into a tough three-game stretch against Iowa State, Texas Tech, and West Virginia with the right mindset.

Here’s a look at the five bold predictions for the Texas Longhorns for the last five games of the 2018 regular season.
