3. Cameron Rising sees his first action of the season

The quarterback discussion is only going to get more intense heading into the Oklahoma State game if the starting quarterback is not ready to go with a lingering shoulder injury. Junior Shane Buechele would seemingly be the set starter if injuries continue to hang around for the starter unless something big changes.

If Herman feels uneasy with the way that Buechele is playing again with Oklahoma State looming large in Week 9, then we could see either of the highly touted true freshmen soon enough. A lot of attention was paid to the presumed next quarterback up after Buechele in the former four-star pro-style quarterback recruit Cameron Rising.

Yet, we also shouldn’t forget about the presence of the athletic dual-threat quarterback out of Newcastle, OK, in Casey Thompson. Given his raw talent and compatible skill set, Thompson should be a great fit moving forward with what Herman likes to run. Both Rising and Thompson are intriguing options for the Horns.

During fall camp leading up to the Maryland game to open the season, Rising was getting more reps ahead or Thompson. By all indications, Rising is still the favorites to get more of the workload if Buechele is not prepared to handle the spotlight. Even if Rising getting into the game just means Texas football is ahead by a good margin in the second half of a game, that’s fitting too.
