3. Rotation of the freshmen on both sides of the ball

Texas football has three true freshman mainstays that are going to be key for this program for years into the future. On defense, those two true freshmen play at the same position in standout safeties B.J. Foster and Caden Sterns. Foster should be able to reach his ceiling within the next year or two while Sterns immediately made an impact for the Horns.

On the other side of the ball, true freshman running back Keaontay Ingram is one of the most dangerous threats Texas has this year. Ingram immediately inserted himself as the best option out of the backfield for the Horns. His running style along with the versatility of senior running back Tre Watson makes for a much better ground game than this team had in 2017.

Beyond Sterns, Foster, and Ingram, Texas doesn’t have much in the way of true freshmen that have proven themselves. It is a lot to ask of a first year player to come through on the stage that the Horns are at right now. A few players that could still make an impact with better health include wide receiver Brennan Eagles, linebacker Ayodele Adeoye, and linebacker/safety DeMarvion Overshown.

As time moves along through the regular season, the coaching staff should take advantage of this new NCAA redshirt rule. With so many seniors that will be departing the Forty Acres on both sides of the ball next off-season, Texas should give some of its younger players the chance to get some game experience.
