Texas Football: 3 ways Longhorns can beat upset minded Oklahoma State
By Shane Black
1. Both sides of the ball must start fast
Both teams are coming into Saturday night not having played a game in 14 days. It is critical that Texas football establish themselves early if they want to give themselves the best chance to secure a win.
The Texas football defense has struggled in the first quarter of games this season. In seven games, they have allowed five opponents to score on their opening drive, and four of them went for touchdowns. These are horrific numbers and they do not represent how the defense has played as a whole, however, the worst thing the Horns can do here is let Hill and company march down the field for an opening drive score.
Oklahoma State is reeling, but quick points will get their rowdy crowd engaged. Something Texas needs to avoid.
If the Longhorns can take the air out of the crowd early they will hold a major advantage. The offense will be able to settle in and control tempo while the defense will be able to take more risks and play freely.
Obviously you want to hold an early lead in every game you play, but this Saturday it is way more crucial than normal. The Cowboy offense is all based around rhythm. If you can make Cornelius feel uncomfortable early, odds are he makes a few mistakes.
If the Longhorns do get down early you can expect to see a heavy does of Hill from the Pokes. If Oklahoma State can control the tempo in this game, Texas could be in for a long night.
The first quarter in this one will go a long way in deciding the outcome.
