3. Sam Ehlinger’s shoulder injury against Baylor

What looked to be potentially devastating for Texas football this season was the injury to Ehlinger that took him to the locker room in the 23-17 win over Baylor on Oct. 13. In the lone home game on the Forty Acres in the month of October for the Horns, Ehlinger was looking to have a big performance to follow up on Red River.

Yet, a bloody hand and a shoulder sprain caused a ton of concern for Texas football fans and players alike. The bye week came at a good time for this team since it allowed Ehlinger to rest and get back to full health before facing Oklahoma State in Week 9. He only played a few snaps against Baylor before suffering that injury too.

The injury to Ehlinger forced junior backup quarterback Shane Buechele into action for most of the Baylor game. Buechele wasn’t nearly as effective as he finished with one touchdown pass and one interception. That touchdown pass that Buechele had was his first of the season and also the only scoring drive he led where the Horns got into the end zone.

It wound up being a good thing for Texas to get Ehlinger back for the Oklahoma State game since the offense could’ve been pretty bad under the direction of Buechele. Ehlinger was one of the very few bright spots for the Horns in that loss, so having him back for that game and for the coming weeks was absolutely huge.
