Texas Football: 10 reasons the Longhorns can still win the Big 12 in 2018
1. Texas still controls its own destiny in the Big 12
Making it to the Big 12 Championship Game won’t mean relying on any other team around the conference this year. At least that’s how it appears now. Texas football is still tied atop the Big 12 standings with Oklahoma and West Virginia, each with one loss in conference play. The Week 9 loss didn’t do anything to knock them out of at least a tie for first place.
Even one more slip up could still see the Horns in the Big 12 Championship Game. But, that would also take at least one additional slip up from either Oklahoma or West Virginia, or both. Texas football and Oklahoma have a similar road to the Big 12 Championship Game in terms of scheduling. Each team has meetings with Texas Tech and West Virginia before the regular season concludes.
Iowa State and Texas Tech are technically still alive in the race for the Big 12 Title. Yet, both Texas Tech and Iowa State would have to win out, with some help, to get to Arlington, TX, on Dec. 1. Texas and Oklahoma look like the two favorites to still meet up for a rematch of the Red River Showdown in the Big 12 Championship Game. West Virginia is a clear player in that race, though.
This is something that the Horns didn’t have in play in year’s past. It has the opportunity to make a run to the Big 12 Championship Game by controlling its own destiny. Texas doesn’t really need any help from anyone else if it takes care of business as it should down the stretch. Of all the factors working in Texas’ favor in the month of November, this is by far the most advantageous.
