Texas Football: 10 reasons the Longhorns can still win the Big 12 in 2018
3. The safeties standing out
Potentially the strongest position group of the defensive side of the ball for the Horns thus far is the safeties. Texas football is getting the most that it possibly could out of the true freshmen pairing of Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster. Junior former five-star prospect Brandon Jones is also finally breaking through.
Seven of the eight interceptions that the Horns have this season came by way of those three safeties. And, half of those in total came from Sterns. We didn’t see a huge game out of any of these three against the Pokes, though. Expect a bounce back game against West Virginia. Even beyond Week 10, the safeties should continue to come up big.
At least heading into 2019, Texas is going to have a crew of safeties that is going to be among the very best in the nation. We should also know that they’ll finish out the 2018 season in the best fashion possible. Any shortcoming from the cornerbacks should also be made up for by the presence of these skilled safeties.
Another nice aspect from these safeties is the differences in each skill set. Sterns is the rangy ball hawk with amazing closing speed and next level instincts. Jones is the ultra-athletic and hard hitting reliable staple in the defensive backfield. Then, Foster is the difference maker at the line of scrimmage that can blow plays up in the backfield.
