Texas Football: Takeaways from instant Big 12 classic loss to West Virginia
3. David Sills V and Lil’Jordan Humphrey are next level receivers
Keeping up with the West Virginia offense meant contending with a top receiving corps in the nation led by a very skilled signal caller. To lead those West Virginia wide receivers is the reigning All-American senior David Sills V. This was concerning because Texas football was already gashed last week by another good receiving corps.
To counter Sills V and the rest of this talented West Virginia receiving corps was the elusive Texas junior wideout Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Fellow Texas junior wide receiver Collin Johnson also played a big role in this game and the previous success for this passing game. That combination of Humphrey and Johnson was a formidable counter for West Virginia’s standout group.
In the first half alone, the Horns got more than 90 receiving yards and one touchdown. Senior running back Tre Watson had a solid day too in the receiving game with one of his three touchdown catches coming on Nov. 3. These contributions were exactly what the Horns were hoping for from the grad transfer running back.
Overall, star wide receivers like Sills V, Humphrey, and Johnson proved why they’re considered among the best at their position for the 2019 NFL Draft class. Senior West Virginia wide receiver Gary Jennings has also been big this year and deserves a lot of the credit for the success of this passing game.
