Texas Football: Overreactions from last second shootout loss to West Virginia
3. Defense still needs a wake up call
We’ll turn the focus to the defensive side of the ball, where the takeaways were much more negative than hoped. Texas football needed a bounce back mainly from the defense after coming up short on the road against the Pokes the week prior. West Virginia is no joke of an offense either. The lack of urgency that the defense came in with signaled an issue that would persist for the entirety of the game.
There are some sources of blame to go for the inconsistencies of the defense. Whether that be injuries, time spent on the field, or just a difficult matchup, it’s true that the defense had a challenging battle of the utmost degree on its hands for Nov. 3. Rising to the occasion is something that elite defenses do and Texas still has a ways to go in that department.
In the past two weeks in the first quarter, Texas has now given up well over 400 total yards which really puts the offensive squarely behind the eight ball. The offense needed a bit more support for this defense that is supposed to be one of the best in the Big 12. You could argue that the West Virginia defense played much better than the Horns.
The Week 9 loss to Oklahoma State should’ve been more than enough to serve as a wake up call for this defense, but that didn’t turn out to be reality. To take down the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Week 11 on the road, this defense is going to need to answer some major questions. This Texas Tech offense is the third straight that the Horns face that can put up yards and points in bunches.
