Texas Football: Overreactions from last second shootout loss to West Virginia
2. The luck ran out in the turnover department
A lot of issues that would get masked if Texas football had held the Mountaineers out of the end zone on the last two-point conversion try. Yet, when you have a close loss that derails a lot of hope for a particular season those issues are going to get brought to the forefront. West Virginia did exactly what it needed to if the ultimate goal was to create issues for Texas football.
An underlying issue that put the Horns at a disadvantage in the loss to Oklahoma State was the lack of turnovers. Neither Texas nor Oklahoma State made an impact in the turnover department in Week 9, and that persisted again in Week 10 on the Forty Acres. Texas didn’t force a single turnover and West Virginia only had one.
Beating a difficult quarterback to matchup with in West Virginia senior Will Grier entailed forcing at least two turnovers out of him. If you let Grier get comfortable in the pocket he is going to make you pay no matter how good the secondary is. Compile the circumstances of the secondary struggling and the lack of pass rush and Grier gets a clear path to victory.
The Texas defense was just lucky that the offense took good care of the football and put up points on the board in all four quarters. The fact of the matter is that with the system that head Texas football coach Tom Herman runs, putting up more than 40 points against West Virginia should be enough to win the game.
