Texas Basketball: 5 reasons this could be a big season for Andrew Jones
2. Better decision making
It’s harder to gauge this aspect of Jones’ game since he doesn’t have that much exposure to work off of since his freshman campaign. Texas basketball had to sideline Jones early in the 2017-18 season because of fatigue experienced from his original cancer diagnoses. That cut a promising sophomore campaign way too short.
The Texas basketball fan base was hoping to see the best out of Jones since he was signed as part of the 2016 class. He is one of the highest rated signees to come to the Forty Acres in the past five years as a former five-star combo guard prospect. If things start to fall more his way in the next year or two, we’ll start to see that impact come through on the court.
In the limited action that Jones saw in the last two seasons, he’s gotten much more efficient with the ball in his hands. He’s turning the ball over much less than he did as a freshman, which is to be expected. His per 40 minutes and per 100 possessions averages also indicate that he’s committing less fouls and turning the ball over around 0.5 times less per game.
Those stats are indicators of a player that’s going to mature very quickly in his third and fourth years with this program. Jones is going to take some time to work his way back into this group with full productivity and effectiveness. In the meantime, these smaller signs of progress are huge to the bigger picture for him.
