Texas Basketball: Key numbers from each player vs. Eastern Illinois
By Shane Black
Andrew Jones (SG) – 9 MIN: 1 PTS (0-2, 0-2), 1 AST, 1 REB, 1 STL
What a moment it was for Andrew Jones to step on the court Tuesday night after overcoming a hard-fought battle with Leukemia. It was a heart-felt moment and proved once again that sports is more than just wins and losses.
In his nine minutes of action Jones looked like he hadn’t missed a beat. He had a nice drive that saw him split two defenders and draw a foul. He played good team defense and had a nice out of bounds save with just one shoe on. It is still unclear how much Jones will be used this season, but he is a very talented kid, and when healthy, would help Texas basketball win a lot of games.
Gerald Liddell (SF) – 7 MIN: 0 PTS (0-3, 0-2), 1 REB
The second highest rated freshman in the 2018 Texas basketball recruiting class proved to be the tenth man on Tuesday night. Gerald Liddell played sparingly in the latter part of both halves.
When he was on the court, Liddell looked a little tight on the offensive end. He showed his strengths on defense with strong on-ball defending. The lack of minutes for Liddell shows that Smart sees him as more of a long-term contributor, but he does have one of the higher ceilings on the team.
Texas basketball next plays Nov. 9 against Arkansas in the annually Armed Forces Classic. The game will be played in El Paso, Texas, and it tips at 6:00 CT on ESPN.
