The 2018 season is getting oh so close to rounding out with Texas football looking for double-digit wins for the first time since 2009.

We can’t hope for much more at this point during the 2018 regular season than for No. 19 ranked Texas football to finish out the season strong with three more victories. That would entail winning out through the two games left in the regular season and either claiming a victory in the Big 12 Championship Game or the postseason.

Texas football locked up bowl eligibility a few weeks back by claiming its sixth win of the season over the Baylor Bears. It could’ve stayed in College Football Playoff contention and as the sole keeper of first place in the Big 12 standings if not for the two losses in Week 9 and Week 10. Yet, that would overlook how stingy the Oklahoma State Cowboys and West Virginia Mountaineers can be.

Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and the Maryland Terrapins were the thorn in the side of head Texas football coach Tom Herman in terms of staying in the national picture one year ahead of schedule. All signs pointed to the Horns coming along more in terms of national contention and outright winning the Big 12 next season, not this fall.

What’s left for the Horns is two games of different magnitudes. The Iowa State Cyclones are the first test for Texas in Week 12. It’s hard to think of a more difficult team to face right now in the Big 12 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames than Iowa State. Texas should just be thankful it gets the Cyclones on the Forty Acres this year.

Here’s a look at the five thoughts for the Texas Longhorns as the football team looks to close out the 2018 campaign strong through the month of November and beyond.
