Realistic expectations the rest of the way

It’s pretty clear at this point that Texas football caught the benefit of the doubt by getting Iowa State at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Nov. 17. Iowa State is red hot since true freshman quarterback Brock Purdy took over in a win back on Oct. 6 against Oklahoma State as he hasn’t lost a single start.

This is very likely to be a matchup between two top 20 teams in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings in Week 12. Iowa State is coming off a matchup filled with a ton of fireworks in a home win over Baylor in which a few altercations broke out. The Cyclones could be missing its star running back due to suspension from that altercation when it faces the Horns.

Moreover, in two weeks Texas travels to Lawrence to face Kansas in a battle that shouldn’t really be close. Yes, Kansas did defeat TCU at home a few weeks ago. No, that probably wouldn’t happen again if head coach Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs got another shot at the Jayhawks. Texas needs to be ready, but shouldn’t sweat Kansas even on the road.

Kansas should still have head coach David Beaty leading the way when the Horns make the Week 13 trip to Lawrence. Yet, it’s already announced that Beaty is terminated effectively at the end of the 2018 campaign. Kansas is already eliminated from the possibility of bowl eligibility this fall. This team will be more looking ahead for what’s to come under a new head coach than what the Horns present in the regular season finale for both teams.
