Texas Basketball Recruiting: Longhorns offered underrated 2021 SF Ben Gregg
A top 2021 target of Oregon State recently received an offer from Texas basketball recruiting in underrated Portland, OR, forward Ben Gregg.
The search for the first commit for the 2020 and 2021 Texas basketball recruiting classes is now officially on with the 2019 group looking pretty good at this point. Texas basketball recruiting is hitting the trail hard for the 2021 class already with offers already sent out to five prospects, including elite five-star combo guard Devin Askew who just took an unofficial visit to the Forty Acres on Nov. 2.
For the 2019 Texas basketball recruiting class, there’s not a single three-star prospect that looks to commit anytime soon or that already gave the pledge to head coach Shaka Smart. For some reason, Smart doesn’t get that many of the underrated three-star high school prospects that could be turned into long-term projects with high ceilings.
However, Smart has a top 10 ranked class in the nation for the 2019 cycle and locked up an eighth ranked class in the nation for 2018. He’s doing just fine in terms of landing quality talent to have depth in the rotation year after year for this program. We’re even seeing that transpire on the court to start off the 2018-19 regular season.
But, Texas basketball recruiting seems to be taking a new approach with one very underrated 2021 high school forward. Columbia Christian Schools 2021 small forward Ben Gregg has a good amount of offers that came his way thus far. Yet, Gregg doesn’t even have a 247Sports Composite Ranking yet for his recruiting profile. Rivals also doesn’t have an official ranking for him yet.
While it’s still early for 247Sports and Rivals to jump on the ratings for Gregg, it seems as if some pretty big programs in the nation know what he brings to the table. Gregg holds offers from six schools and should get more soon from some high profile west coast basketball programs.
The Texas Longhorns are really the only program outside of the sphere of geographic relevance that sent an offer to Gregg so far. Gregg received his offer from the Horns on Oct. 31 which is his most recent from any school. Yet, his most recent notable event for his recruitment came when he visited the Oregon State Beavers earlier this month.
This 6-foot-8 Portland, OR, native is going to be tough to pry out of the hands of some of the bigger schools out west. Oregon State is one example of a school that is going to push hard to keep him in state. However, Texas basketball recruiting has a lot of resources to land an underrated prospect like Gregg when it pulls its full effort and focus into it.
Some other programs that offered Gregg include the Washington State Cougars and Eastern Washington Eagles. He could also get some offers soon from big time teams like the Arizona Wildcats, Gonzaga Bulldogs, and Oregon Ducks. Although, this would be a great prospect for Smart and the Horns to focus on in the next year or two to bring to the Forty Acres.
