1. Success with quarterbacks

The one thing that we will all look back on for Kingsbury’s time at Texas Tech was some of the quarterbacks he developed. Kingsbury’s quarterbacks were thriving in Lubbock while Texas football was floundering at the position on the Forty Acres. It was just unfortunate for Kingsbury that he didn’t have more success from both sides of the ball.

Between 2013 and 2018, Texas Tech boasted a very impressive list of quarterbacks that are looking to excel at the next level. That list includes Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns, and Davis Webb of the New York Jets. To follow up on all those standout quarterbacks, Bowman has a promising future in Lubbock.

In that same time period that Kingsbury developed quarterbacks like Webb, Mahomes, and Bowman, Texas didn’t boast as many good signal callers. The mediocre quarterback line that rolled through the Forty Acres was partly due to outside circumstances from the rotating coaching carousel, namely the three years under Charlie Strong.

However, the Horns had quarterbacks like Tyrone Swoopes, Case McCoy, and Jerrod Heard (who is now a wide receiver), while Texas Tech had huge numbers posted at the same position. The good news for Texas is that quarterbacks like Buechele and Ehlinger ushered in a new era of success at the position. Ehlinger could benefit from an assistant like Kingsbury taking him to new heights.
