With the new NCAA football redshirt rule allowing players to appear in up to four games, let’s see which Texas football players get a year back.

In the summer of 2018, the NCAA mandated a new transfer rule for college football. This rule stated that a player can play in up to four games with their team and still claim that year as a redshirt. This new redshirt ruling had a direct impact on the Texas football program this year, as it did many other teams in the nation.

The good consequences of this rule are endless. It allows coaches to experiment with young players, getting them game experience where in the past they may have sat out in every contest.

It allows coaches and player alike to feel out their depth in the first four weeks. If after a few games a player is not getting the playing time he wants and thinks he may be buried on the depth chart for his tenure, he is now allowed to transfer and not lose a year of eligibility.

It helps with injuries as well. Medical redshirts were somewhat common in the past, but there were many stipulations that were not kind to the player.

With that being said, here is a chart tracking all game participation of the Texas football regular season schedule. Granted, the Texas Longhorns still have two games to play, but we have a strong outlook on what most players situations are.
