Since the first meeting in the Red River Showdown this year, the Oklahoma ground game exploded. Despite the season-ending knee injury to star running back Rodney Anderson, who was so integral to Oklahoma’s rushing success in 2017, the offense is thriving at a level higher than ever before.

The losses of former Heisman winning quarterback Baker Mayfield and Anderson didn’t seem to slow this offense down at all this fall. Former Texas A&M Aggies junior transfer quarterback Kyler Murray took Mayfield’s place as the starter without skipping a beat. Murray is actually posting stats that could beat out Mayfield this year.

Moreover, Anderson already declared for the 2019 NFL Draft which gives way to the next running backs on the depth chart to take the torch for Oklahoma’s ground game. The future at running back for the Sooners seems split between freshman Kennedy Brooks and sophomore Trey Sermon.

The answer in the Big 12 Championship Game for the Sooners on the ground should be mostly in Brooks’ hands. Brooks has the hot hand right now, averaging nearly 10 yards per carry this year, and 518 rushing yards and six touchdowns in his last three games. The Texas football defense has to be prepared for the threat he brings in this game.
