4. Alamo Bowl

Matchup: Iowa State Cyclones vs. Washington State Cougars

Date: Dec. 28

Location: San Antonio, TX

In another instance of two highly ranked teams facing off in a non-New Year’s Six Bowl, the Alamo Bowl could be quite impactful to the Texas football program along with the rest of the Big 12. A Washington State loss combined with a win for the Horns in the Sugar Bowl could vault them above the second-highest ranked team out of the PAC-12.

The Valero Alamo Bowl will feature a team that is really starting to prove itself on the national stage in the Iowa State Cyclones, taking on the Washington State Cougars out of the PAC-12. Iowa State was on a roll until it fell short against Texas football during the regular season. It still finished off the regular season in a good way with eight wins.

The way the Apple Cup turned out for Washington State officially eliminated the PAC-12 from College Football Playoff contention. Before Washington State was eliminated for good, the PAC-12 and the Big 12 were considered the two Power Five conferences that were on the outside looking in for the four team Playoff field.

A win from the Big 12’s third or fourth best team over the PAC-12’s second best team would help show that it is superior this year. Most people share that ideal that the Big 12 is much better than the PAC-12 this year, but a win for Iowa State in the Alamo Bowl could prove that for good. An Iowa State win would also be good for the Horns since it took down the Clones on the Forty Acres in Week 12 of the regular season.
