5. Tom Herman’s off-the-field drama

We can jump into something that happened before the start of the regular season for Texas football. During fall camp, the Horns were hit with some unfortunate off-the-field issues that are both hard to foresee and control for the coaching staff. Especially when some of the off-the-field drama involved head Texas football coach Tom Herman himself.

Texas kicked off fall camp with some key transfers that were announced, like that of senior safety John Bonney going to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. There were some other injuries to the younger players for the Horns that shook up the roster and the outlook for the 2018 campaign.

The main off-the-field issues that engulfed Herman involved his past ties to the Ohio State Buckeyes football program and head coach Urban Meyer. Herman was called out by the Ohio State coaching staff amid the scandal from Meyer and former assistant Zach Smith, and continued to be on his Twitter during the regular season.

There were a few other things that involved Herman in some off-the-field drama stemming as far back as the middle portion of the off-season. What Herman did well is not let any of these distractions blow up to anything huge. Some of them didn’t even involve him directly. Just look at all the drama between ESPN commentator Emmanuel Acho and senior cornerback Kris Boyd after a late October loss in Stillwater, OK.

You have to give some props to Herman for the way he held things together for the Horns during the regular season, even when drama looked like it might engulf the locker room.
