3. Success of the freshmen class

We knew from the moment Herman inked the highly touted, and third ranked in the nation, 2018 Texas football recruiting class that this team was going to have something special in store for a while. What we didn’t know was how fast this freshmen class would be able to excel on both sides of the ball.

On the offensive side of the ball, most of the contributions from true freshmen came from talented former Carthage High School standout Keaontay Ingram. The running back duo of senior Tre Watson and Ingram both made an instant impact for the Horns. The ground game will have to reload for next year, though, after the departure of Watson.

Furthermore, there were more true freshmen that stood out on the defensive side of the ball this year than on offense. That was largely due to the need to upgrade the secondary in the second year under defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. The two freshmen that made the biggest impact in the secondary were also two of the highest rated signees in the 2018 class. Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster are going to be impactful for the Texas defense for a long time.

A few other players from this 2018 freshmen class to watch out for moving forward with more opportunities in the coming years include linebacker Joseph Ossai, safety/linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, and skill position/returning threat D’shawn Jamison. The hope is that the 2019 Texas football recruiting class will be just as deep and skilled as the 2018 class. But, that could be a slim chance to pan out since the Horns might have the biggest contributions from its freshmen class this year compared to any other team in the nation.
