2. Running back depth

What most fans were watching for this Texas football recruiting class to add on Dec. 19 was the commitment of a pair of key running backs that both announced within the span of a few hours. This leaves the Horns needing to ramp up the search for another answer in the backfield heading into the 2019 off-season.

Up until a few days before the start of the Early Signing Period, the 2019 Texas football recruiting class looked to be the front runner to land the commitment of four-star IMG Academy running back Noah Cain. The Penn State Nittany Lions wound up prying away Cain from the Horns, which was the first bit of bad news of the day.

Then, an extreme long shot for the Horns by Dec. 19 gave his commitment to head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The nation’s No. 1 rated 2019 high school running back prospect, Trey Sanders, pretty much eliminated the Horns from his commitment decision the day he made his announcement.

The good news is that the Horns at least locked up one talented running back prospect, with four-star Buford, GA, native Derrian Brown. Texas lost out on its main three running back targets entering the week of the Early Signing Period. A top uncommitted prospect still left like four-star Deondrick Glass will now get more attention from Texas.
