The inclusion of highly touted hometown five-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson on this list comes with an asterisk. Was Wilson a prime target and a top two ranked receiver in the nation for the 2019 recruiting cycle that would be a massive add for the Horns? Yes he was.

Was he also an extra bit of drama that Herman and the rest of the locker room didn’t need around anymore? The answer to that question is also yes. Nothing that Wilson said was really too much for Texas football recruiting to get past, but he did have quite the storyline filled recruitment.

Wilson is a Lake Travis High School product, which is usually fertile recruiting ground for the Horns. And, it’s not like Herman and the rest of the Texas coaching staff didn’t put forward a valiant effort to land him. In the end, head coach Urban Meyer (former head coach after the Rose Bowl) and the Ohio State Buckeyes landed the commitment of Wilson.

All in all, this Texas football recruiting class still has a solid presence from the wide receiver spot. Landing Wilson would give the Horns that immediate impact presence it needs to replace Lil’Jordan Humphrey and/or Collin Johnson, if they both decide to declare for the 2019 NFL Draft. He was a big miss, but one that does have a backstory that gives the Horns a break.
