The thought of the 2019 Texas football recruiting class being able to land a talent like the nation’s top rated high school running back Trey Sanders is almost too much to bear. Sanders is a five-star prospect that the Horns seemed to be gaining some traction with in the latter half of the regular season. That wound up not to be such a credible rumor.

By this 2019 Texas football recruiting class landing four-star Dulles High School and Sugar Land, TX, offensive tackle Isaiah Hookfin on Dec. 21, running back is left as the biggest positional need. Texas whiffed on a few running back prospects in the days leading up to, and during, the Early Signing Period.

However, Sanders was a big fish that the Horns could slot into the offense immediately to make an impact. The loss of senior running back Tre Watson left a void that is going to be difficult to fill with some other transfers that will hamper the depth. Sanders would be quite the one-two punch with Keaontay Ingram and four-star Buford, GA, running back Derrian Brown in 2019.

As is usual for a lot of teams that try to compete with them on the recruiting trail, head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide won out in pursuit of Sanders’ commitment and signing. Sanders will find himself in a good situation in Tuscaloosa next year, and could get some work immediately. The chance to make a huge immediate contribution was there for Sanders on the Forty Acres too.
