The most recent bit of impactful transfer news came out of South Bend, IN, with senior Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Brandon Wimbush. Even though he got some game action this fall, Wimbush was overshadowed by another standout Notre Dame quarterback. In four starts this season, Wimbush posted just under 1,000 total yards and five touchdowns, with six interceptions.

Wimbush was beat out by junior Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book for the starting job with a huge performance in a regular season win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Book never looked back, and led the Fighting Irish down the path to the program’s first ever College Football Playoff appearance, against the Clemson Tigers.

The numbers that Wimbush posted this year showed that he took a step back from last year, where he actually had a better stat line than his play might’ve indicated. And, Wimbush saves his last year of eligibility due to the newly instituted NCAA transfer rule, allowing players to appear in four games without foregoing a year of eligibility.

The issue that Texas football would run into in pursuit of Wimbush is the same thing he ran into at Notre Dame. Book looks to be the set in stone starter for the next two years. Getting stuck behind Sam Ehlinger on the Forty Acres is not the ideal situation for Wimbush, but he could find himself with more playing time with Texas because of the departures of Thompson and Rising than he would with head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame.
