Texas Football vs. Georgia: 5 reasons Longhorns will win Sugar Bowl
1. Experience of facing balanced offenses this year
The nearly impossible task of limiting the ultra-explosive and historically productive Oklahoma offense was something Texas football faced twice this season. Oklahoma’s offense did something over the past two years that few programs in the nation have ever been able to accomplish in the history of college football.
The Heisman Trophy went to an Oklahoma starting quarterback two years in a row. Last year, it went to Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield. The former Texas A&M Aggies transfer, and Oakland Athletics 2018 first round selection, Kyler Murray took the Heisman Trophy back to Norman, OK, this fall.
Texas was the only team that got to face head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners twice this year, and you’d have to give some props to defensive coordinator Todd Orlando for the way he stepped up both times. Orlando and the Horns defense limited a very efficient Oklahoma ground game to less than four yards per carry and 130 rushing yards in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Horns also got the best of the Oklahoma offense in the first Red River Showdown this year.
This defense at least comes in with the confidence and previous experience of limiting potentially the best offense in the nation twice this year. Georgia’s offense is one of the more balanced and efficient offenses in the SEC, but Texas should be able to handle them. If Texas can turn the Georgia offense one dimensional, we’ve seen what this group is able to do to help it get on the right side of the win column.
