Practical Cap Space in 2019: $48 million

The talks surrounding the potential interest between Kevin Durant and the New York Knicks traced back to the beginning of the regular season. Between social media campaigns and headlines discussing enormous indications of interest from the Knicks to land Durant, this plot is going to only heat up as the regular season moves along.

Recent reports expressed the desires of the Knicks to go “all in” for the pursuit of Durant heading into free agency this offseason. It does make a lot of sense for the Knicks to build around someone like Durant with the amount of resources this franchise has available for the offseason. Pairing Durant alongside star forward Kristaps Porzingis is the idea behind this logic.

A few things that are working in the Knicks favor are the breakout of Tim Hardaway Jr., who is averaging more than 20.0 points per game this season, along with a ton of cap space. If the Knicks don’t want to hang on to Hardaway Jr., despite the breakout campaign, the franchise could add a few additional pieces that make it more attractive for Durant to come play at Madison Square Garden.

In all likelihood, the Knicks will enjoy a selection high up in the NBA Draft Lottery and a ton of room to make some moves in free agency and the trade market. The Knicks will also likely be huge sellers at the Trade Deadline to add some future pieces, draft picks, and free up some cap room for the offseason.
