Re-examining Georgia’s case to get in

Getting into the College Football Playoff is no easy task, unless you’re head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. That argument could go for head coach Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers too. But, rising teams like Texas football and Georgia are having a difficult time earning the respect that a Clemson or Alabama carries, and with good reason.

Georgia was oh so close to knocking off the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game. There’s a good shot that Georgia would be in the College Football Playoff if not for Tua Tagovailoa having some ankle issues, forcing Jalen Hurts to come into the game under center. Hurts led the Crimson Tide to a nice run at the end of the fourth quarter to nab the 35-28 victory.

Both the advantage and the disadvantage for the Dawgs in the SEC Championship Game was the path to the Playoff after. If Georgia won the SEC Title Game over Alabama, it would definitely be in the Playoff field, likely with a top two rankings. On the other hand, if Georgia lost it was likely going to be on the outside looking in like it was in reality.

Even with the SEC Title Game loss to the Crimson Tide, there were some national pundits that were in favor of them getting in over either the Sooners or Notre Dame Fighting Irish as the three or four seed. The issue with that is the resumes of the three teams surrounding the Dawgs in the rankings. As one-loss Power Five conference champions, both the Sooners and Ohio State Buckeyes should have been obvious choices over the Dawgs. An undefeated Notre Dame team also seems deserving.
