Texas Football: Did Georgia deserve spot in CFP after all?
Would Georgia make any difference
In all likelihood, putting Georgia in the College Football Playoff four team field over Notre Dame would have made a big difference in the Cotton Bowl against Clemson. Looking back at that game with 20/20 hindsight is a nice idea in theory. Since Georgia was a two-loss team that didn’t even win its conference, the logic was not there for them to get in the Playoff in the first place.
The fact that the Dawgs were ranked as high as No. 5, over the likes of Ohio State, was surprising anyway. Ohio State did have a bad loss on the road against the Purdue Boilermakers, but it also had some marquee victories down the stretch.
Head coach Urban Meyer saw his Buckeyes torch a quality Northwestern Wildcats team in the Big Ten Championship Game. That was added to an Ohio State Playoff resume that also featured quality wins over the Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Michigan State Spartans. Georgia’s resume did feature a win over the Florida Gators, but that was about it.
Wins over the Kentucky Wildcats, Mizzou Tigers, and Auburn Tigers, were all nice for the Dawgs. Georgia’s resume still fell in line behind the Sooners and Buckeyes.
However, that doesn’t mean that a hypothetical Georgia matchup against Clemson would not be more entertaining than it was against Notre Dame. Heck, you could even argue that Texas football would give Clemson a much tougher test than Notre Dame did. In terms of the eye test alone, Georgia could be considered the third best team in the nation. The thing is that it still doesn’t appear to be as strong, or deserving, as Clemson getting into the College Football Playoff National Championship Game against the Crimson Tide.
