West Virginia head coach

Who’s in: Neal Brown

Who’s out: Dana Holgorsen

Of the moves we’ve seen so far around the Big 12 coaching carousel, the former West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen bolting for a Group of Five job might be the most surprising. The Houston Cougars snagged Holgorsen after letting former head coach Major Applewhite go. Applewhite left the program following an embarrassing 70-14 postseason loss to the Army Black Knights.

Even though he won’t get to face Texas football as much as he did when he was with West Virginia in the Big 12, Holgorsen could now be competing some with them on the recruiting trail. Head Texas football coach Tom Herman should be able to outpace Houston on any given recruiting cycles, but this is something noteworthy to watch.

On the other end of the spectrum, West Virginia could be one of the programs that takes the biggest step back in the Big 12 in 2019. The losses now of the former head coach and superstar quarterback, Will Grier, makes for a bleak outlook for the 2019 campaign. West Virginia barely defeated the Horns in 2018, and that could completely change starting next season.

This could be a home run hire for the Cougars, but West Virginia could take some time to recover from what could be a tumultuous off-season. West Virginia brought in a solid head coaching candidate with the former Troy Trojans head man Neal Brown. The transition from the Sun Belt to the Big 12 can be a long one though, and the Mountaineers might fall behind in the process.
