Texas Football: Most impactful Big 12 coaching changes for Longhorns in 2019
Oklahoma State offensive coordinator
Who’s in: N/A
Who’s out: Mike Yurcich
Of the positions included on this list, Ohio State contributed quite a bit to the assistant coaching turnover in Big 12, especially with the Oklahoma schools. Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator is a risky hire, but it could come with a big reward. The next move for the Oklahoma schools for the assistant coaches is still unknown.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys lost its offensive coordinator, Mike Yurcich, so that he could return to his home state and join first-year head coach Ryan Day with the Buckeyes. With Meyer out of the picture in Columbus, OH, Yurcich can become a prominent coaching figure as the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.
Oklahoma State’s opening for offensive coordinator does have some potential candidates in mind, but nothing official yet. Head coach Mike Gundy is likely to choose carefully and go with someone who could be in Stillwater, OK, for a while. He brought in a new defensive coordinator last year that helped when he faced Texas football.
However, that Oklahoma State bug that the Horns can’t seem to get off their back could change a bit with the electric offense undergoing a major change. Yurcich was Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator for seven years, and Gundy sometimes doesn’t adjust well to change. Texas could really benefit from this shift.
